Guess the grade...1898 IHC Grade on post 39

Here is a neat little IHC. There is more green in it than my images show. Please take a stab at grade. The coin is not mine just taking pictures....

Where are the hits that make anyone think this is a 64? I don't get it.

Okay, it's NGC copper so it's overgraded a point or more. I'd guess 66RB. Not crazy about the obverse die state but the colors are fabulous!

Below and to the right of last feather. Possibly also last A in America.

Also, carbon on the M in America.

Lance, I have news for you - not every copper coin graded by NGC is over-graded. It looks to me as it deserves a 66, regardless of who graded it.

We are looking at large images, so those flaws are quite small, and not out of character for coins of that type, which grade 65 or 66.

I'm relying on the IHC expert -
its a great coin - and far better than
    a 64 - too nice for a 65 - so - its
    got to be a 66 !

    For comparison purposes ...
    here's my 1898 IHC in 64 RB

So in your mind it's an NGC 66, or if in a PCGS holder a 64/5?
    Very vague answer IMHO.
  • I have to say that front-end damage is a little distracting but I wouldn't hold this coin out of gem for that, it's too slight. 65-technical, 66-market.

Is that die rust on the reverse upper-left quadrant?

It looks like a 65RB to me. Scratch by the last A in AMERICA.

MS66RD Nice took pic @ 2:21 PM on 3/12/2010 with a Nikon D200 funny how much info you can get from a pic. But it did not give the grade. That is a guess. image

NGC 66RB but PCGS would probably grade it 65RB only because of the luster, but 64RB wouldn't be surprising because of the reverse anomoly Rick points out.

I'd like my copper well done please!

That's what he gets for taking such fantastic pictures. I'll bet they, in themselves, would net a pretty good buck or three. I still can't believe you used a Brownie Starmite on those, blu62vette...that's amazing!

OK, let's get serious. That sure does look like rust. I guess I was just taken away by the beauty of this sunset of a gem to have realized it. I don't know that I'd be too eager to factor that into the value on the coin, though; I mean, if it's rust, it's graceful-looking rust. Don't get me wrong. As a buyer, I'd certainly be focusing attentively on it. I don't know that I'd be too anxious to discount this coin for that, though, were I on the other side of the table. "You want this stunning, gem eye-candy, my friend, that's part of the package." Hey, JMO...

Market-wise, it deserves every bit of that (IMHO)...
